The Society has ten meetings per year plus a gala Christmas Party. Meetings feature excellent programs that are very entertaining and informative. A question and answer sessions follows and light refreshments are served. Recently authors, local personalities, and even a few historical personalities that have come to life have shared their experiences with us. Occasionally meetings are held in locations other than the Livestock Exchange Building. Recently one of the meetings was at a local ranch and included dinner and some demonstrations of western riding in a beautiful setting.

Other society events include trips and outings to places of historical interest, participation in the many Stockyards events like the yearly Forts Day, and other fund raising events to support the Society programs. The Society also works with Oakwood Cemetery to produce the annual Oakwood Tour, which draws thousands of visitors each fall.

The NFWHS is very serious about its role in helping to preserve the legacy of the history of North Texas and is represented on many commissions and boards. The Society often takes a public position on issues of historical preservation.

Membership Meetings

NFWHS meets the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Livestock Exchange Building. Programs featuring local authors, historians and historical characters entertain and enlighten us. We also discuss programs and special events we planning.

As always, memberships are open to anyone interested in the history of the stockyards and North Fort Worth. The Museum is run by volunteers, so do consider us when planning your 2010 schedule.

Thanks to the many members of the NFWHS for their volunteer service to the Stockyards Museum during 2010. The following people have given their time to help at the museum either as a docent for visitors, running the cash register or helping in the office with cataloging and filing. Without their help, the museum would not be able to be open six days per week (seven days in the summer).

Last Update: 12/30/2011

Wow—What a surprise we had at the October meeting. Glen Campbell, the young Australian cowboy who won the 2009 Fort Worth shotgun raffle, showed up at the museum. He was introduced to those attending the meeting and then he and
Tom Wiederhold and other board members discussed the transfer of the shotgun to him.

George A. Butler, 71, passed away Monday,
November 8 after a brief illness. The family requests donations to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or the American Heart Association.

George graduated from Northside High School in 1957.
